A Sleepzone Guide

Just like proper diet and regular exercise, a good night's sleep is extremely needed for your mental, physical and emotional health. Everyone is aware of this fact, yet people don't get 7-8 hours of sleep at night. A Sleepzone Mattress Guide offers simple solutions for a better night’s sleep.

History of Mattress
The age old history of a mattress is probably not something to be taught. But, like everything, a mattress also has a past, present and a future. The most ancient resting structures were constructed of leaves and grass, held together with animal skin. Below is the detailed explanation of evolution of a soft and comfortable mattress.
  • In the Neolithic period, people started sleeping on man-made beds and mattresses. Before that, they were sleeping on an arrangement made with leaves and grass, wrapped in hides. Though, those primitive mattresses are not as comfortable as the modern day mattress, these first beds were the better alternative than sleeping on the ground. Till 1865, steel coils were not patent for the vast majority of mattresses.

  • During 3400 BC, Egyptian pharaohs discovered the benefits of raising a pallet off the earth. King Tutankhamen had a bed of ebony and gold. Common people slept on palm bows heaped in the corner of their home.

  • Around 3,500 B.C., Persians invented the first “water-beds," made of goatskins filled with water. The inhabitants of Roman Empire, 200BC, slept on mattresses filled with feathers. Till 1865, steel coils were not patent for the vast majority of mattresses.

  • During the Roman Empire, the first luxury bed was made and decorated with gold, solver or bronze, these beds featured mattresses stuffed with reeds, hay wool or feathers.

  • 16th and 17th centuries. Mattresses were generally stuffed with straw or down, placed atop a latticework of rope.

  • The expression “sleep tight” comes from the 16th and 17th centuries when mattresses were placed on top of ropes that needed regular tightening.

  • The late 18th century. Mattresses were generally stuffed with straw or sown, placed atop a latticework of rope.

  • The first coil spring construction for bedding was patented in 1865.

  • 1930's Innerspring mattresses and upholstered foundations became serious contenders for the dominant position they now enjoy in the U.S. And Canada due to its sleep and health benefits as they provide the right comfort and support.

  • Air-beds were introduced in 1980.

  • During 1990s, Spacious sleeping is once again on the rise. In 1999, the queen-size mattress becomes America's most popular choice for mattress size, for the first time ever beating the twin.

  • 2000's choice and comfort are key worlds in contemporary bedding. In addition to an almost unlimited range of innerspring mattress designs, new types of foam mattress cores as well as air-beds, water-beds and high-tech adjustable sleep sets offer consumers attractive, quality alternatives.
